About the Author
Sándor Márai was once born in Kassa, within the Austro-Hungarian empire, in 1900, and died in San Diego, California, in 1989. He rose to reputation as one of many prime literary novelists in Hungary within the Thirties. Profoundly antifascist, he survived the struggle, yet persecution by means of the Communists drove him from the rustic in 1948, first to Italy, then to the United States.
