Discovered there by a German-Russian botanist, Johann Sievers, in 1793, it has amazing variability in size, taste, shape, colour and texture, the infinite combination of characteristics that reside in the genes of today’s sweet-apple seeds. Sievers died before he could trace his discovery to the cultivated apples of the day, and this connection was not revealed until the twentieth century.
